THE NEW POLICY FRAMEWORK TO MEET SDG 6 IN UASIN GISHU COUNTY.
UASIN GISHU COUNTY FOCUS ON PROVISION OF CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION.
The County has since its actual functionality in 2013 had tremendous achievements towards
meeting the principles provided for in the service charter especially the vision which is
endeavored towards a prosperous and attractive County in Kenya and beyond.
The County is fully aware that the charter can only be fully implemented if the strategies on
infrastructure and industrialization are met. The County has in this essence put emphasis on the sixth sustainable development goal. Water as a resource goes on a long way to provide
sustainable living due to its universal solubility in its industrial and chemical use as well as other life uses.
Uasin Gishu has integrated management of water through the policies like making water an
expenditure priority in this fiscal year. The County is in process to build 15 dams across all the
six sub-counties which will bring about equitable access to safe and affordable water for both
home and industrial large scale use. Emphasis has been put on how the water will be safely used and mechanisms like de-silting are ready for enactment.
The County is focused on safe drainage and eradication of release of untreated effluents to
streams and rivers as well as other chemicals and safe dumping of waste to avoid contamination of water. All these are a great focus towards protecting the wetlands and natural ecosystems in
the same. The County is a tourism pearl with a range of magical scenes from the stony Sosiani River where Eldoret town receives its name from to the water falls like Ngara and the human landmarks depended on the natural ecosystems like the Sosiani power station.
The County through the department of environment has focused on managing solid waste
through collecting and safely dumping it. The County being a great determinant of food
production in the country has focused on ensuring that water rationing will be a thing of the past soon and affordability has been considered as the pumping to eventual supply will be through solar power which is green energy and environmental friendly.
This year's budget allocation of about Ksh 1.98 billion with a huge amount of about Ksh 1.6
billion being allocated for development is simply remarkable. The allocation accounts to about
24.7% of the total budget.
The provision of clean water to all with a focus on future contingencies is a right move as
demand for the resource is set to rise due to population increase and industrial use. The County is set to achieving these sustainable goals and this in any way will prepare the County to meet challenges like waters scarcity due to change of rains and other global factors like global warming and climate change.
