UASIN GISHU RECOGNIZES THE RESOURCEFULNESS OF ITS YOUTH.
UASIN GISHU COUNTY YOUTH AFFAIRS ARE AT HEART.
The demographics from Annual Development Plans in Uasin Gishu is that the youth form about 78% the composition of the total population in the County which is estimated to be 1.4 million. The youth form the largest composition of the population in Kenya at large and it is due to this that there is a whole article enshrined in the constitution that concerns their affairs.
Article 55 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 stipulates that Kenya shall ensure the youth: access relevant education and training, have opportunities to associate and to be represented in all spheres of life, access employment and are protected from harmful culture and exploitation. Article 21 provides room for implementation of rights and fundamental freedoms of a number of groups which among them includes the youth.
Uasin Gishu has over the period since her operations as a delocalized type of local government
worked on ensuring that youth affairs at all levels are put into consideration through action plans
and policy frameworks. A Youth Training Policy has been put into display to ensure that the youth get technical knowledge and skills. In addition, Information Technology learning has been enabled to ensure that the youth can have innovative skills and get ready to cope up with the evolving world.
The County has upgraded and renovated the existing Vocational Technical Centers. Some of these
centers like Rift Valley Technical Training Institute have been remarkable in producing the best
well-equipped youth personnel which is just a clear sign of the County’s continued support.
The county has also constructed eleven new VTCs which have brought in new optimism in terms of
employment to teachers and youth learning. The County has also been sponsoring the youth to the various centers. In the last financial year, over 700 students were sponsored by the county to train in the various courses offered. Internship programmes have been enabled where youth from these learning institutions are given a chance to work in the county premises and at a pay.
The county has not just supported the youth in the education sector but in other areas like cooperative and business empowerment. Kijana Na Acre program is just one of the many programmes in place. The county has been urging the youth to join cooperative unions or register new ones where they can get funds and propel their economic being. Rehabilitation centers have been set up to vindicate the youth who have been living in the streets and have been receiving little support.
Indeed, Uasin as a metropolitan fast-growing center has worked tirelessly to ensure youth affairs
are changed. The county is already enrolling new programmes that are endeavoured to fully
empower the youths. These processes will make the County be the pearl admirer as its well put in
her vision which is to be a prosperous county in Kenya and beyond. This is an eventual
accomplishment of the 8th sustainable development goal which is about decent work and
economic growth.
